Eid al-Adha Context

Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar. Muslims around the world sacrifice animals such as sheep, goats, cows, and buffalo to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

While millions of animals are sacrificed during the holiday, the unique appearance and viral fame of this particular buffalo led to an unusual intervention by the state.
