NEW YORK – Jimmy Donaldson, known globally as MrBeast – the world’s largest YouTuber with over 300 million subscribers – is facing a bombshell lawsuit from a former female employee who alleges severe workplace misconduct, including sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and retaliatory termination after her maternity leave.

The lawsuit, filed in a North Carolina court, threatens to inflict significant damage on the reputation of the 27-year-old content creator, who has built a multi-billion dollar media empire around his philanthropic stunts and high-budget videos.

Former Employee Alleges Toxic Work Environment

Laurie Mayormates, the former employee, filed the legal complaint against MrBeast’s production companies, Dream Team LLC and Night Media LLC, accusing the organization of creating a hostile work environment for women .

According to the lawsuit, Mayormates began working as an assistant producer for MrBeast’s YouTube channel in September 2022 after graduating from the University of South Carolina . She alleges that despite her dedication and consistent request for feedback, she was repeatedly told she was “not a good fit” – a critique that was never made to male colleagues .

The complaint also accuses a manager who identifies as “Santa,” described as the head of the main production team, of consistent sexual harassment. Mayormates claims the manager would stand uncomfortably close, breathe down her neck, and make remarks about her smelling like “roses and candy,” adding that she would not “fit in” unless she was a “bro” .

Pregnant and Working from Hospital

The most serious allegations center on Mayormates’ termination, which she claims occurred just three weeks after she gave birth . According to the lawsuit:

  • Mayormates took a remote meeting while lying in a hospital bed just five days after delivering her daughter
  • Her water broke just before a meeting, yet she was expected to stay online rather than go to the hospital
  • The company allegedly booked her a flight while she was in labor, expecting her to attend an event in New York just three weeks postpartum
  • Her direct supervisor commented that she would be “taken out back like a dog” if she did not work hard enough

Mayormates claims she was told she was being laid off due to “performance issues” when she returned from leave, despite never having received a formal warning or negative performance review during her tenure .

‘Boys’ Club’ Culture

The lawsuit paints a picture of a workplace dominated by an “old boys’ club” culture where men reportedly made jokes about women and their bodies. It claims that male jokes about “how tight women are” would “regularly and openly occur” .

According to the suit, a senior producer nicknamed “Cap” once screamed at a female team member in a directorial meeting, saying: “Fine, then I’ll just talk to the boys about it if you’re not going to listen” .

Company Response

MrBeast’s spokesperson, along with representatives from Dream Team and Night Media, have categorically denied the allegations, describing the lawsuit as an attempt to gain public attention and acquire financial compensation .

“We do not tolerate harassment or discrimination and are committed to fostering a workplace rooted in respect and integrity. We have and will continue to investigate any complaint,” a spokesperson told Business Insider.

The legal teams for both companies have emphasized that Mayormates’ position was eliminated as part of a company restructuring, which also impacted other employees across both organizations .

Legal Framework

The lawsuit alleges violations of several key federal and state laws, including the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) , which provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year. The suit also cites violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 .

Mayormates is seeking an unspecified amount in damages, including back pay, front pay, and emotional distress damages.

Reputation at Stake

The lawsuit comes at a particularly sensitive time for the digital creator, who has recently been named one of the most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine .

MrBeast’s brand is built on his carefully cultivated image as a generous philanthropist who plants millions of trees, builds wells in Africa, and cures blindness. This lawsuit threatens to undermine that image by revealing a potentially toxic workplace culture behind the scenes.

If Mayormates succeeds in proving her allegations, it could result in one of the largest employment discrimination payouts in the digital media industry’s history and permanently tarnish the reputation of the world’s most popular YouTuber.
