Google will invest $15 billion in India over the next five years to build a large-scale data centre and artificial intelligence (AI) base in the country’s south.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, announced the plan at a ceremony in New Delhi, calling it “the largest AI hub we are investing in anywhere outside the United States.”

Kurian said the company would make a capital investment of $15 billion over five years to establish a gigawatt-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a city in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. He added that Google plans to eventually expand the centre to multiple gigawatts.

India’s Information Technology Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, thanked Google for the investment, saying the new digital infrastructure would “go a long way in meeting the goals of our India AI vision.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu described it as a *“very happy day” for the state.

State Technology Minister Nara Lokesh called the deal a “game-changing investment” that followed “a year of intense discussions and relentless effort.” Writing on X, he said: “It is a massive leap for our state’s digital future, innovation, and global standing. This is just the beginning.”

Meanwhile, Dario Amodei, CEO of US startup Anthropic, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said his company plans to open an office in India next year.

Anthropic’s move follows a series of announcements by other leading AI firms seeking to tap into India’s growing user base.

OpenAI recently said it would open an India office later this year, with CEO Sam Altman noting that ChatGPT usage in the country had quadrupled over the past year.

In July, AI firm Perplexity announced a major partnership with Indian telecom giant Airtel, offering the company’s 360 million customers a free one-year Perplexity Pro subscription.

Demand for AI tools and solutions has surged in India — projected to have over 900 million internet users by year’s end — driven by rapid adoption among businesses and individuals alike.
