While football has long been the dominant sport in Saudi Arabia, the kingdom is now making a major foray into cricket. The first-ever Saudi franchise T20 league is set to launch later this year, marking a significant step in the country’s sporting diversification under MBS Vision 2030.
Dunes League T20: What We Know So Far
The Dunes League T20 has been officially sanctioned by the Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation (SACF) and is scheduled to launch in October 2026.

The six-team league has been developed in partnership with the Sports Asian Network and two talent agencies: Unique Sports Group (which manages England fast bowler Jofra Archer) and Prolithic (which manages India’s Abhishek Sharma). Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh will serve as the league’s ambassador.
Player Eligibility and Salary Structure
The league is expected to feature a mix of recently retired international cricketers who remain active on the global franchise circuit. According to ESPNcricinfo, teams will be allowed a maximum of four players who have represented Full Member nations in the last two years — a structure designed to remain within ICC regulatory thresholds without requiring special approval.
Top players could earn salaries of up to USD 100,000 for the tournament.

The kingdom has been steadily increasing its presence in the cricket world over the past five years. As part of its Vision 2030 plan to diversify the economy away from oil, Saudi Arabia has hosted several major cricket events:

Rumors of a Saudi-backed T20 league to rival the IPL have circulated for the past three years, and the Dunes T20 represents the first concrete step toward that ambition.
Will England Players Participate?
According to BBC Sport, franchise regulars such as Alex Hales, Jason Roy, James Vince, and Moeen Ali are among the English players being considered for participation.
However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has previously expressed reluctance to support a Saudi-backed T20 league, citing a crowded international calendar and existing player workload concerns.
Venue and Schedule
All matches are expected to be played at the 4,000-capacity Taif Cricket Ground near Jeddah. The tournament is scheduled for the second week of October 2026, following the conclusion of the Caribbean Premier League and Canada Super 60, and before the start of SA20 and the Big Bash League.

Safety Concerns Amid Regional Tensions
A women’s T20 tournament in Saudi Arabia scheduled for later this year was recently postponed until 2027 due to safety concerns amid the ongoing Iran conflict. However, BBC Sport reports that players canvassed by the Dunes T20 have indicated a willingness to travel to the country provided tensions in the Middle East do not escalate further.
Path Forward
The SACF has stated that the league is designed to put Saudi Arabia “on the global cricket map” while also serving as a pathway for developing local Saudi talent. Whether the Dunes T20 will eventually rival established leagues like the IPL remains to be seen, but it represents a significant first step for cricket in the kingdom.
