In a significant leap in aerial warfare, the United States has officially begun production of its sixth-generation fighter jet, the F-47, being developed by Boeing under the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program. The aircraft is designed to eventually replace the F-22 Raptor and is expected to make its maiden flight by 2028.

The announcement comes just three weeks after China showcased its latest war machinery, including advanced fighter jets and hypersonic missiles, during a major military parade—signaling an intensifying competition for air dominance.

Speaking at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference in Washington, US Air Force Chief of Staff General David Allvin confirmed that Boeing has already started assembling the first F-47 unit. “We must move fast. Our goal is to see this jet in the skies by 2028,” he said. He highlighted that the milestone was achieved after years of research, hundreds of test hours, and thousands of hours of manpower.

General Allvin further noted that Boeing commenced production only months after the official announcement, emphasizing the urgency of the project: “We are ready, but we must continue at speed.”

Earlier in March 2025, US President Donald Trump had formally announced that Boeing was tasked with building the sixth-generation fighter under the NGAD initiative. He also revealed that experimental F-47 prototypes had been secretly flying since 2019.

According to the US Air Force, the F-47’s first official flight will take place before the end of Trump’s current presidential term in January 2029.

How lethal F-47 is?

F-47 will feature:

  • Supersonic speed
  • Advanced stealth technology
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven weapon systems
  • Coordination with unmanned drones
  • Integration with network-centric warfare systems

This combination, experts believe, will allow the US not only to challenge enemy air power but also to dominate future multi-platform battlefields.

Strategic Implications

Analysts interpret the timing of the US announcement as a strategic signal to China, following its recent military parade. With both Washington and Beijing showcasing next-generation aerial capabilities, the race for air supremacy is rapidly accelerating.

The US Air Force has already approved funding for the project and is expected to allocate more resources in the upcoming fiscal year.
