In a dramatic move that underscored deep divisions among Western allies, U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly left the G7 summit in Canada, refusing to endorse the group’s final communiqué.

According to international media reports, Trump not only left the summit early but also declined to sign the joint declaration issued by G7 leaders. Reuters, citing a senior U.S. official, reported that Trump’s decision was driven by his opposition to a section of the communiqué urging de-escalation in the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

The draft of the G7 joint statement carried several contentious clauses. It included reaffirmation of Israel’s right to self-defense and labeled Iran as the primary source of regional instability and terror. Notably, it also emphasized the international community’s stance that Iran must never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.

The communiqué stated:

“We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.”

Furthermore, the leaders stressed the protection of civilians and called for a broader resolution to the Iran crisis, including a ceasefire in Gaza. They also highlighted concerns over global energy markets, pledging to coordinate with partners to ensure market stability in case of escalated tensions.

Trump’s refusal to sign the statement appears to reflect his broader policy approach toward Iran during his presidency, in which he withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and pursued a maximum pressure campaign. His departure from the summit has sparked mixed reactions among diplomats and analysts, some of whom view it as a setback to G7 unity in addressing Middle East crises.

As tensions continue to rise in the region, the G7’s statement serves as a clear signal of Western alignment with Israel, while leaving little room for diplomatic engagement with Iran — a stance that could further complicate efforts for regional de-escalation.
