Relief Hopes Diminish for Palestinians Despite Gaza Ceasefire

Gaza situation after heavy rain

Despite the Gaza ceasefire, hopes that the hardships of Palestinians would ease have yet to be fulfilled. Two major factors continue to worsen the situation: repeated Israeli attacks under various pretexts, and severe weather conditions.

The first winter rainfall in Gaza has multiplied the suffering of Palestinians sheltering in makeshift tents under the open sky. After heavy rain, thousands of tents were flooded, leaving countless displaced families without protection. Hundreds of thousands of homeless Palestinians are now enduring harsh cold while waiting for humanitarian aid—yet Israel has once again blocked aid deliveries into Gaza, preventing trucks carrying essential supplies from entering.

Gaza also lacks any proper drainage system for rainwater. To protect their tents from flooding, Palestinians have resorted to digging trenches around them.

According to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, supplies for 1.3 million Palestinians are ready for distribution, but Israel is not allowing these consignments to pass through. The head of UNRWA stated that the freezing temperatures and continuous rain have made aid delivery even more critical. Palestinians sheltering in damaged buildings also face the risk of those structures collapsing.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to violate the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. According to Arab media, three Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Since the ceasefire came into effect on October 10 this year, Israeli forces have killed more than 274 Palestinians and destroyed around 1,500 buildings.
