Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued his first official statement following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowing retaliation and describing the killing as a “declaration of war against Muslims.”
In a strongly worded address, Pezeshkian said Iran considers revenge both a “legitimate right” and a “national duty.”
“We regard retaliation as our rightful obligation and will make every possible effort to fulfill this duty,” the Iranian president stated.
His remarks signal a potential escalation in regional tensions as Iran’s leadership reshapes its strategy after the loss of its long-time Supreme Leader.
“Declaration of War Against Muslims”
President Pezeshkian characterized Khamenei’s death as more than a political assassination, framing it as an attack on the wider Muslim world.
Analysts say this language is likely aimed at consolidating domestic support while also appealing to regional allies aligned with Tehran.
Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, played a central role in shaping the country’s military doctrine and foreign policy, particularly its stance toward the United States and Israel.

Araghchi described the late Supreme Leader as:
- Steadfast in his convictions
- Deeply strategic in decision-making
- A symbol of resilience in the pursuit of what he called the “path of truth”
He added that Khamenei leaves behind “a lasting legacy of dignity, wisdom, and perseverance,” calling his death a profound and heartbreaking loss for Iran.
“The flag that Ayatollah Khamenei raised will be carried to even greater heights,” Araghchi said, signaling continuity in Iran’s political and ideological direction.
