Pakistan Responds to 29% US Tariff with Diplomatic Strategy

Web Desk: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has expressed optimism that the recent US tariff hike on Pakistani exports could become a stepping stone toward deeper economic cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Saturday, Aurangzeb emphasized the need to frame the issue as a win-win opportunity in the medium to long term. “We want to present our perspective in a way that showcases mutual benefit for both Pakistan and the United States,” he said.

🇺🇸 US Imposes 29% Tariff on Pakistani Imports

The development follows an aggressive trade move by US President Donald Trump, who has imposed a 29% tariff on imports from Pakistan — one of the steepest trade penalties in recent memory. The initial 10% tariff came into effect on April 5, while the full 29% rate is set to begin April 9.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the US is Pakistan’s largest export market, with shipments valued at $5.44 billion in the fiscal year 2023–24. Much of this comes from the textile sector, which now faces a severe blow due to the sudden tariff escalation.

🔍 Pakistan’s Strategic Response: Committees and High-Level Talks

Viewing the situation as both a challenge and an opportunity, the Pakistani government has initiated a comprehensive strategy. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed:

• A steering committee led by Finance Minister Aurangzeb, including ministers, senior business leaders, government officials, and academics.
• A working group headed by the Secretary of Commerce to support policy formulation and negotiation.

Aurangzeb remarked, “You should never let a good crisis go to waste,” underlining Pakistan’s intention to negotiate a favorable resolution through diplomacy and strategic engagement.

✈️ Delegation to Visit Washington for Talks

The minister revealed that a high-level delegation would soon travel to Washington to engage with US officials. The group will present a detailed policy package aimed at securing relief or alternative trade mechanisms to offset the economic impact.

Recommendations are currently being finalized and will be submitted to the Prime Minister for approval within days.

Aurangzeb reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to “constructive engagement” and hoped that diplomatic efforts would help reshape the situation into a long-term economic opportunity.
