Russia Offers Mediation to Ease Pak-Afghan Tensions

Russia offers mediation to Pakistan, Afghanistan

Sunday, 16 November 2025 | Web Desk

Russia has offered to mediate in order to reduce tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, during a press briefing, described both Pakistan and Afghanistan as important partners and said that tensions between the two countries are not conducive to regional stability and security.

Zakharova stated that stability in the region is a priority for both Russia and the international community. She emphasized that reconciliation efforts could help ensure lasting peace. She urged Pakistan and Afghanistan to exercise restraint, resolve their differences through dialogue, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

Before Russia, Iran had also offered mediation and reconciliation between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban.

Through mediation efforts by Qatar and Türkiye, several rounds of talks were held between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Doha and Istanbul. However, these negotiations reached a deadlock because the Afghan Taliban refused to provide written assurances.

According to security sources, the Afghan Taliban verbally agree with Pakistan’s position on combating terrorism but do not provide any written commitments.

Pakistan’s only demand from the Afghan Taliban regime is that it prevents its territory from being used for terrorism. Despite the legitimacy and fairness of this demand, the Afghan interim government has so far failed to give any encouraging response.

It is worth noting that all the foreign militants involved in the recent terrorist attack on Wana Cadet College were Afghan nationals, who continued to receive instructions from handlers based inside Afghanistan throughout the attack.
