In a major escalation, Iran has confirmed that several of its top military commanders and nuclear scientists were killed on Friday in Israeli airstrikes targeting critical Iranian facilities. The strikes reportedly hit nuclear installations, ballistic missile production sites, and high-ranking military leaders in an attempt to halt Tehran’s progress towards developing a nuclear weapon.

Below is a list of those killed in the strikes:

HOSSEIN SALAMI

Hossein Salami, born in 1960, was the commander-in-chief of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 2019, Salami played a key role in shaping Iran’s military policies in recent years.

MOHAMMAD BAGHERI

Major General Mohammad Bagheri, also born in 1960, served as the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces since 2016. A veteran of the Iran-Iraq War, Bagheri rose through the ranks of the IRGC and was a central figure in Iran’s military establishment.

GHOLAMALI RASHID

Major General Gholamali Rashid led the IRGC’s Khatam al Anbia headquarters. A seasoned military leader, he previously served as deputy chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces and was actively involved in the Iran-Iraq War.

FEREYDOUN ABBASI-DAVANI

Nuclear scientist Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani headed Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization between 2011 and 2013. Known for his hardline views, Abbasi also served as a member of Iran’s parliament from 2020 to 2024.

MOHAMMAD MEHDI TEHRANCHI

Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, a prominent nuclear scientist, was serving as the head of Iran’s Islamic Azad University in Tehran at the time of his death.

In addition to these senior figures, four other nuclear scientists—Abdolhamid Manouchehr, Ahmad Reza Zolfaghari, Amirhossein Feghi, and Motalibizadeh—were also killed in the coordinated strikes.

The attack marks a significant blow to Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure and is expected to further heighten tensions in the region.
