Canada Relaxes Rules For Temporary Foreign Workers

Web Desk — Canada announces a new temporary measure removing the limit on the length of the study programs that temporary foreign workers can enroll in without a study permit.

The objective behind this relaxation is to facilitate the foreign workers who work for the country’s prosperity but face barriers in the types of study programs in which they can enroll to pursue their dreams and improve their lives.

The foreign workers, as part of the fresh measure, will have the opportunity of seeking additional training and education to assist them in their careers. Later, this may help get foreign workers to transition to permanent residence in Canada.

Previously, foreign workers could study while working, but only in programs of 6 months or less but for longer programs, they needed a separate study permit.

This was a huge hurdle for those who wanted to improvise their studies by getting more training. Likewise, those who wanted to upskill or validate their foreign credentials through certain programs also found this restriction as a major barrier in their way.

With no restriction on the length of the program, foreign workers can study full-time or part-time while their work permits are valid or until the expiration of the new 3-year temporary policy.

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, says the move is aimed at addressing the critical labor shortage which he termed as great news for all stakeholders involved.

Who Are Eligible?

This measure will benefit only those who have a valid work permit or a pending decision on their work permit extension on June 7, 2023.

Remember that if a foreign worker wishes to study longer than the duration of their work permit, they still need to apply for a study permit.
