LAHORE – Former Pakistan captain and current national selector and batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy, Misbah-ul-Haq, has emphasized that young cricketers must focus on discipline and consistency to succeed at the highest level.
In an interview with PCB Digital, Misbah shared his insights on how young players can develop into successful cricketers and what role coaches, mentors, and parents should play in their journey.
Key Advice for Young Cricketers
“Young cricketers should focus on discipline and consistency. Performance does not come from talent alone — it comes from discipline and consistency.”
Misbah stressed that talent alone is not enough. A successful player must demonstrate:
- Daily hard work
- Fitness – no compromise on physical conditioning
- Practice – consistent and purposeful
- Balanced diet – proper nutrition for peak performance
‘Don’t Kill Their Passion’
Misbah also advised coaches, mentors, and parents to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on young players:
“Coaches, mentors, and parents should avoid putting unnecessary pressure on young players. Give them responsibilities, but don’t kill their passion for playing.”
He highlighted that while responsibilities are important, the joy of playing the game must be preserved to ensure long-term growth and mental well-being.
The Importance of First-Class Cricket
Misbah also stressed the importance of four-day cricket (first-class cricket) in developing young players:
“Four-day cricket helps strengthen young players’ technique and mental power.”
He noted that playing longer formats builds resilience, patience, and a stronger technical foundation — all of which are essential for succeeding in international cricket.
