MOSCOW – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described his brief visit to Islamabad as “extremely useful,” stating that highly positive consultations were held with Pakistan’s leadership regarding the ongoing negotiations with the United States.

Araghchi arrived in Moscow on Sunday, where he is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to review the progress of the war and assess the current regional situation.

‘Very Positive Consultations’ in Islamabad

Speaking to Iranian media upon his arrival in the Russian capital, Araghchi provided insights into his unannounced trip to Pakistan:

“We had very positive consultations with officials in Islamabad. The officials consulted on past events and those specific circumstances under which negotiations with the United States can continue,” Araghchi said.

The visit comes amid a critical phase in US-Iran negotiations, with President Trump having recently canceled a planned trip for his senior delegation to Pakistan, citing logistical delays.

Moscow Visit: Meeting with Putin

Araghchi explained the purpose of his visit to Russia:

“I have come to Russia, intending to continue close consultations with Moscow on regional and global matters. I will meet with President Putin today. The meeting with the Russian President will be a good opportunity to review the progress of the war and the current situation.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister’s trip to Moscow suggests Tehran is keeping its key allies informed about both the battlefield situation and the status of diplomatic negotiations with Washington.

Oman Consultations on Strait of Hormuz

Araghchi also revealed that discussions were held during his visit to Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz:

“There were discussions about the Strait of Hormuz during the visit to Oman. Iran and Oman are both coastal countries of the Strait of Hormuz, so mutual consultation is inevitable. As two coastal nations, we must maintain coordination in every possible measure. The interests of both countries lie in this.”

The comments indicate that Iran is actively coordinating with Oman on maritime security issues related to the strategic waterway.

Pakistan’s Mediating Role

Araghchi’s positive remarks about the Islamabad consultations reaffirm Pakistan’s continued role as a key mediator between Washington and Tehran, even as the US delegation’s travel was canceled earlier this week.

Pakistan’s leadership has maintained close contact with both sides, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir receiving praise from President Trump for their mediation efforts.

What’s Next?

With Araghchi now in Moscow for talks with Putin, and the future of US-Iran ceasefire uncertain, the diplomatic landscape remains fluid. The Iranian Foreign Minister’s consultations in both Islamabad and Moscow suggest Tehran is actively engaging with multiple international partners as it navigates the complex negotiations with Washington.
