In a monumental and seismic development, Iran’s official state media has confirmed the martyrdom of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the latest Israeli strikes on the Iranian capital.
According to official reports, Ayatollah Khamenei was martyred while present in his office at the time of the attack. His Chief Adviser, Ali Shamkhani, was also martyred alongside him.
National Mourning Declared
In response to this colossal national tragedy, Iranian authorities have announced 40 days of official mourning across the country. A seven-day public holiday has also been declared nationwide to allow for the mourning period.
In a powerful symbolic gesture, the black flag was hoisted over the dome of the holy shrine of Imam Reza in the city of Mashhad, a traditional symbol of profound grief and mourning in Iran. Iranian media report that massive crowds have spontaneously gathered in Mashhad as news of the Supreme Leader’s martyrdom spread, enveloping the city in an atmosphere of deep sorrow.
In neighboring Iraq, the holy shrines lit red lights, symbolizing the call for vengeance and revolution.
IRGC Vows ‘Most Devastating Operation’
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued a fierce statement vowing revenge for the martyrdom of its Supreme Leader.
“A devastating and offensive operation, the most destructive in Iran’s history, will begin soon,” the IRGC declared. “Trump and Netanyahu have crossed the red line. They will have to pay the price for this.”
The IRGC also confirmed the martyrdom of Commader Pakpour. Following the loss, Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, immediately assuming command.
Regional and Global Implications
The martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei, who had held the position of Supreme Leader since 1989, represents an unprecedented escalation in the conflict and a complete transformation of the Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape. The promised retaliatory operation by Iran is now the central focus of global attention, with fears of a wider regional war intensifying by the hour.
