Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has squarely blamed Aleema Khan, sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, for delaying his medical treatment, alleging that she repeatedly vetoed decisions despite the party leadership being onboard with the government’s proposed medical arrangements.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Naqvi claimed that while PTI’s leadership was consistently cooperative regarding Imran Khan’s eye treatment, Aleema Khan’s interventions caused unnecessary delays. “Every time we reached an understanding with the party leadership, Aleema Khan would veto it,” he stated.
Naqvi alleged that the treatment issue was politicized. “Vigorous politics was played over the founder’s treatment. Whoever the prisoner may be, we will provide medical facilities according to the Constitution and the law,” he asserted.
The Interior Minister revealed that the government remained in continuous contact with PTI leadership over Khan’s eye treatment. “We asked PTI to name any renowned eye specialist. Instead, they demanded that Khan be admitted to a hospital immediately, which was not possible,” Naqvi explained.
Naqvi provided a detailed account of the medical examination process:
- The government selected the best doctors for Imran Khan’s examination.
- PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar was invited to personally observe the doctors’ examination.
- “We waited for Barrister Gohar for an hour. He informed us that after consulting the party leadership, he would not come,” Naqvi said.
- The doctors examined Khan at 3:30 PM and remained with him for an hour and a half.
Naqvi stated that the government then contacted Barrister Gohar again, inviting him, along with the Opposition Leaders in the National Assembly and Senate, to bring their own doctors.
“Barrister Gohar said their doctors were in Lahore. The Opposition Leaders came to PIMS and met with the doctors treating Khan for about an hour and a half. During this meeting, 45 minutes were spent with two doctors on the phone briefing the PTI-affiliated doctors. Their doctors later admitted that the treatment being provided was excellent and that they would have done the same,” Naqvi revealed.
PTI Leaders’ Satisfaction
According to the Interior Minister, PTI’s political leaders expressed satisfaction with the treatment. “I told them to ask their doctors if any test was missed, and we would get it done,” he said.
Naqvi disclosed that Mahmood Khan wrote a letter to the Prime Minister, but “we were already in contact with PTI leadership before Mahmood Khan’s letter. Ayaz Sadiq was facilitating communication between us and the opposition.”
Aleema Khan’s Role in Delay
Naqvi claimed that PTI requested Khan be hospitalized for one week. “We said if doctors recommend it, we will admit him for two weeks if needed. But Aleema Khan told party members that accepting this would ‘down their issue.’ The medical check-up was delayed because of Aleema Khan. If your intentions were right, you would have agreed on the first day,” he alleged.
The Interior Minister also revealed that Imran Khan required an injection in his eye. “As a precaution, we took him to the hospital and got the injection administered,” he said, emphasizing that providing necessary medical care to any prisoner is the government’s duty.
Naqvi raised questions about PTI’s protest tactics. “There are other prisoners in the country too. The food Imran Khan receives is all part of the record. Blocking roads and inconveniencing people over this is beyond understanding,” he remarked.
Mohsin Naqvi Made Efforts for Imran Khan Release
He suggested taking journalists to show the facilities being provided to Khan, adding, “The government does not want to do politics on this matter. There are many things that are inappropriate to share at this time.”
