First Samsung smartphone assembled in Pakistan unveiled

By Web Desk — The first smartphone assembled by Samsung in Pakistan has been unveiled, marking an important milestone in the production sector that will reduce Pakistan’s import bills.

It has partnered with Lucky Motor Corporation to assemble smartphones in Pakistan. They have jointly set up an assembly plant at Port Qasim.

Hammad Azhar, the Energy Minister of Pakistan, told the launching ceremony of the locally assembled Samsung smartphone that 70 percent of smartphones are now assembled in Pakistan. It comes after introducing the Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy (MDMP) a year ago in June 2020.

Samsung’s launch was a result of the success of the Device Identification Registration & Blocking System (DIRBS) system launched three years ago.

According to Azhar, the government now intends to export the locally assembled smartphones overseas.

According to him, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had collected more than Rs135 billion in taxes under DIRBS.
