World Boxing Apologizes to Boxer Imane Khelif Over Gender Test Disclosure

Algerian Boxer Imrane Khalif gender test issue

Web Desk: The President of World Boxing, Boris van der Vorst, has formally apologized to renowned Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. He issued a written apology for mentioning Khelif’s name during the announcement of a new gender testing policy.

According to international media reports, Imane Khelif’s name was brought up when World Boxing announced on Friday a new policy mandating gender testing. The move sparked criticism from various quarters, who argued that World Boxing failed to protect the privacy of the athlete when announcing the policy.

Imane Khelif, who won a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games last year, had previously been in the spotlight after a controversial gender test conducted by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

President Boris van der Vorst contacted the Algerian Boxing Federation and issued a formal apology. In his letter, he wrote, “I personally extend a formal apology to all of you and acknowledge that Imane Khelif’s private information should have been protected.”

In its newly announced policy, World Boxing stated that from July 1st, gender testing will be mandatory for all boxers to ensure the safety of participants and to provide an equal playing field for men and women.

It is worth noting that Imane Khelif’s medical report was leaked last year, which claimed that she was not a woman but a man. Following this, she announced legal action against the leak of her medical information.
