Low-Cost Housing: Microfinance Banks Come Forward To Help

Microfinance Banks loans for low-cost housing

Web Desk — By amending its prudential regulations the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) takes a step forward to facilitate microfinance banks (MFBs) to lend for low-cost housing and micro and small enterprises (MSEs).

According to an SBP circular, “Building on measures taken in recent years to encourage financing to low-cost housing for the low-income people, the central bank has revised prudential regulations for MFBs to promote access to finance for low-cost housing and microenterprises.”

As per statistics, there were over 4.6 million borrowers with an outstanding loan portfolio exceeding Rs290 billion at the end of CY2021. There were over 674,000 MSEs and 75,000 housing finance beneficiaries with loans totaling Rs77bn and Rs20bn, respectively.

According to the SBP, the revisions to prudential regulations are expected to enable MFBs to reach out to low-income segments of the society that are often underserved.

The SBP believes the revised regulations will lower the cost of serving borrowers from lower-income groups to borrow money for low-cost housing and micro and small enterprises (MSEs).
