ISLAMABAD – A four-member medical board constituted by the Supreme Court has recommended that PTI founder Imran Khan be allowed frequent meetings with his spouse, as well as access to newspapers and television, to help manage his anxiety and fluctuating blood pressure.

The recommendations were submitted in a report filed by the Superintendent of Adiala Jail to the Supreme Court, following a medical examination conducted on August 1, 2026 by Dr. Akhtar Ali Bandesha, a cardiologist at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

Medical Examination Findings
Dr. Bandesha examined the PTI founder and recorded the following observations:

Parameter Reading
Blood Pressure 140/100 mmHg
Pulse Rate 50 beats per minute
ECG No abnormal changes observed
Symptoms Reported Fluctuating BP, headaches, restlessness
The doctor noted that while Khan’s ECG showed no unusual changes, his blood pressure was elevated and he complained of headaches and anxiety.

Medical Board Recommendations
To address these concerns, the medical board made the following recommendations:

More family visits – particularly with his wife, to help reduce mental stress

Newspaper and TV access – to keep him informed and provide mental stimulation

Daily walking – at least one hour of walking within the jail premises

CT coronary angiography – recommended due to age and stress levels

Adjustment of BP medication – increase and modification of existing treatment

The board noted that family visits are essential for managing anxiety and blood pressure, and that mental calmness is currently lacking in Khan’s jail environment.

Context
Imran Khan, 73, has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since August 2023. The court has been monitoring his health condition through periodic medical reports. This latest report was submitted to the Supreme Court in compliance with court orders.

PTI leaders have repeatedly raised concerns about the former prime minister’s health, particularly his eyesight and blood pressure, and have called for better medical facilities.

Supreme Court to Review Report
The Supreme Court is expected to take up the medical board’s recommendations in the coming days. It remains to be seen whether the court will order the jail authorities to implement the suggested measures.
