ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s media regulator, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) , has suspended the broadcast license of Geo News for 15 days, citing “unacceptable religious depiction” during a programme aired on June 26, 2026.
According to a notification issued by PEMRA, the suspension is effective immediately. The regulator determined that Geo News violated the terms of its license and breached religious, social, and cultural norms during the programme “Safar-e-Ishq”, broadcast on 10th Muharram.
What Happened?
PEMRA’s directive stated that Geo News committed a serious violation by airing content that depicted religious figures and themes in a manner deemed inappropriate and offensive. The authority said the broadcast:
- Violated the terms of Geo News’s broadcast license
- Breached Pakistan’s religious, social, and cultural values and norms
- Hurt the sentiments of viewers, particularly during the holy month of Muharram
Geo News has not yet issued an official statement on the suspension.

When viewers search for Geo News on cable, a message appears on screen stating:
“This channel has been taken off air on the instructions of PEMRA.”
