Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has proposed a policy of political reconciliation to lead the country out of its current economic and political crises. He asserted that navigating the nation out of its political turmoil would ultimately require compromise, a task for which only the “King of Reconciliation,” Asif Ali Zardari, is uniquely suited.
Addressing a gathering at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on the occasion of the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Bilawal stated that Benazir’s final message was one of reconciliation, a theme she also explored in her book. He emphasized that for reconciliation to succeed, political parties and their leadership must abandon political extremism. Political workers, he added, must bring politics back within its rightful democratic sphere. He condemned acts such as the attacks of May 9th and the hurling of abuses at state institutions, stating they have no place in legitimate politics.
Reflecting on the past, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said, “Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was given the death sentence; we expressed political disagreement, engaged in political contest, and ultimately succeeded. Consider the immense injustices inflicted upon Benazir Bhutto, yet she always declared democracy to be the best revenge.” He recounted the nationwide unrest following Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, where chants of resentment echoed from every corner. However, he credited Asif Zardari for deciding to fight back within the political arena. “By raising the slogan of ‘Pakistan Khappay’ (Long Live Pakistan), Asif Zardari saved the federation, protected democracy and its workers, and ultimately ousted a dictator,” he stated.
The PPP Chairman lamented that the current state of politics is not benefiting the people but is instead harming the country. “Our political divisions are damaging politics, democracy, the economy, and national security,” he said. To pull Pakistan out of this political crisis, he urged political forces to find a political way forward.
Bilawal asserted, “If there is trust in any one individual among the political parties to lead the country out of political polarization, it is Asif Zardari. There is one person who is the hope to eliminate political division from Pakistan’s politics, one person who is the ‘King of Reconciliation,’ and he can lead Pakistan out of this difficulty.”
Imran Khan Wants Agitation, not Reconciliation
In his concluding remarks, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari paid tribute to the armed forces, stating, “Our forces defeated India; a victory against India is a victory for all of Pakistan. The mere mention of our Field Marshal’s name makes Modi hide.” He highlighted the legacy of national defense, noting that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto made the country a nuclear power, Benazir Bhutto brought missile technology to Pakistan, and President Asif Zardari procured aircraft from China that were used to shoot down six Indian jets.
