ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) The Federal government may give an extension to the incumbent National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman Javed Iqbal.
The Express Tribune quoted sources as saying that Prime Minister Imran Khan discussed the matter of giving extension to the NAB chief with Law Minister Farogh Nasim and Attorney General Khalid Javed. In the meeting amendments to the NAB Ordinance, 2000 were discussed in detail. The final meeting in this regard will be held on Thursday (29/09/01).
According to the newspaper, a senior federal minister said that the government would extend the tenure of NAB chairman Javed Iqbal.
The senior minister who was part of the PM-led meeting further said that it was yet to be clear whether the incumbent chairman’s tenure would be extended for another term or he would be allowed to work until the appointment of his successor.
In case of an extension, it would be for four years.
According to the report, one government functionary suggested to the PM to extend the NAB chairman’s tenure until the appointment of his successor. Otherwise, consultation with the leader of the opposition is mandatory to give another term to the incumbent chairman.
Political analysts believe that the opinion of the “powerful circles” will be significant in the final decision.
