Acupuncture treatment for depression

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the central nervous system.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, acupuncture is most commonly used for pain relief but researchers are also studying whether it can be used to treat other health conditions, such as depression.

Acupuncture and Depression

Many people with depression consider complementary therapies like acupuncture because acupuncture is associated with fewer side effects as compared to anti-depression medicines. Experts say fatigue and lack of energy are common symptoms of depression. Furthermore, acupuncture is widely used to relieve pain, which in itself can cause depression or be caused by depression.
Doctor Jasdeep Sandhu, a psychiatrist at LifeStance Health in Atlanta, says that acupuncture works with the energy and channels in the body to restore balance, which is one of the central goals of acupuncture.

A doctor of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in California, Nell Smircina, says acupuncture also works to balance hormonal imbalances and to increase levels of feel-good brain chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin.

Is Acupuncture A One-Step Solution To Relieve Depression?

A small number of studies have suggested that acupuncture may reduce depression symptoms, but more research is needed before the treatment can be considered a reliable CAM treatment. These studies suggest that even if acupuncture helps some people with depression feel better, it’s unlikely that it will ever be a one-stop solution.

Studies Showing Benefits of Acupuncture Treatment Of Depression

Many studies around the world found acupuncture to be moderately effective in reducing the severity of depression compared with standard depression treatments or no treatment at all.

Some other studies showed that among nearly 2,300 total participants, acupuncture was a viable addition to standard depression treatments.

Can Acupuncture Solely Manage Depression?

Medical experts cautions that though acupuncture may help you feel better, it’s not a replacement for standard depression treatments. They say one can experience the greatest benefits of acupuncture while seeing a therapist, psychiatrist, or other medical professional.

The acupuncture treatments varies from person to person. Some people start with two or three sessions per week. Others find that once a week is enough, especially for maintenance treatment or general pain or stress relief.

Consult Doctor Before Trying Acupuncture
Before trying acupuncture, consult your medical doctor to be sure it’s safe for you. According to the Mayo Clinic, acupuncture may not be safe for people with these conditions:

  1. People with bleeding disorders
  2. People with pacemakers
  3. Pregnant people

Acupuncture Side effects

The potential side effects of acupuncture are often minor and may include soreness, as well as mild bruising or bleeding where needles were placed.

Is Acupuncture Worth Trying for Depression?

It is not clear that acupuncture relieves depressive symptoms, says America’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. However, acupuncture is believed to be safe and free of side effects when performed properly.

Acupuncture is Expensive

Finally, keep in mind that acupuncture treatment can be expensive. Before scheduling an appointment, check with your health insurance company to see if acupuncture is covered.
