AMSTELVEEN \u2013 Pakistan’s men’s hockey team endured a forgettable start to their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign, suffering a 1-4 defeat against England in a Pool D match on Saturday. However, the loss was compounded by an extraordinary administrative blunder that left former players and fans stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bizarre incident occurred in the 17th minute of the match, shortly after England had taken a 1-0 lead and were awarded a penalty corner . As the team prepared to defend, it became apparent that the mandatory protective gear was not available on the pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Pakistan player was forced to sprint back to the dressing room to retrieve the equipment, returning with a large black bag of gear before the penalty corner could be taken. The delay resulted in Pakistan captain Abu Bakar Mahmood being shown a green card by the referee, forcing him to spend two minutes off the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Captain Slams ‘Unwanted Record’
<\/strong>Former Pakistan captain Salman Akbar was highly critical of the blunder, calling it an embarrassment and questioning the team’s preparation for the biggest stage in hockey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Wow. Another unwanted record from Pakistan hockey. In the opening match of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 against England, Pakistan reportedly forgot the penalty corner protective gear in the changing room. As a result, the captain received the green card,” Akbar wrote on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Forgetting essential protective equipment for penalty corners simply cannot happen on the biggest stage of international hockey. Preparation is not just about tactics, fitness and skills. It is also about discipline and organization,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The World Cup demands the highest level of professionalism. Unfortunately, moments like this raise serious questions about how prepared we really are for the big stage.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Match Overview
<\/strong>On the field, Pakistan were outclassed by a dominant England side. Stuart Rushmere opened the scoring for England in the 12th minute. After Pakistan failed to convert their own penalty corners earlier, the defending champions added further goals from Sam Ward, Samuel Hooper, and James Albery. Pakistan’s lone consolation came from Rehan Abdul Afraz in the 50th minute. Pakistan failed to convert either of their two penalty corner opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
