They say success shines bright. But for us, even our failures are glowing\u2014broadcast across the world for everyone to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we look at global university rankings, and see Pakistani institutions tumbling further down the list year after year, one cannot help but wonder: these are the places where our future is being built. If this is their condition, what kind of future are we crafting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Grim Picture: No Pakistani University in the Top 350<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a single Pakistani university has been able to secure a place among the world&#8217;s top 350 universities. What is even more alarming is that our institutions have declined further from their already poor positions last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few examples from the latest QS World University Rankings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>University<\/th><th>2025 Ranking<\/th><th>2026 Ranking<\/th><th>Change<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad<\/strong><\/td><td>354<\/td><td>381<\/td><td>\u25bc 27<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>NUST (Islamabad)<\/strong><\/td><td>371<\/td><td>384<\/td><td>\u25bc 13<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>University of the Punjab, Lahore<\/strong><\/td><td>542<\/td><td>588<\/td><td>\u25bc 46<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>LUMS, Lahore<\/strong><\/td><td>555<\/td><td>608<\/td><td>\u25bc 53<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Agriculture University, Faisalabad<\/strong><\/td><td>654<\/td><td>629<\/td><td>\u25b2 25<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>UET, Lahore<\/strong><\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><td>791<\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Aga Khan University, Karachi<\/strong><\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><td>951<\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan<\/strong><\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><td>1001+<\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>University of Lahore<\/strong><\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><td>1001+<\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only one university showed a slight improvement, while the rest continued their downward slide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Problem Is Not Infrastructure\u2014It&#8217;s Quality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decline is not because students aren&#8217;t getting good food, or because buildings are old, or because classrooms lack air conditioning. Pakistani universities often have excellent infrastructure and modern facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real problem is academic quality. The standard of teaching, research, and intellectual rigor is falling\u2014and falling fast. That is why our global rankings are not improving; they are deteriorating every single year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Visit to a Private University in Lahore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some time ago, I visited a private university in Lahore. I asked a student: &#8220;What&#8217;s special about this place?&#8221; He replied with a straight face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The students here are experts at making TikTok videos.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one sentence summed up everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education Is Being Treated Like a Business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Pakistan, the government treats education like a neglected stepchild, while the private sector treats it like a cash cow\u2014printing degrees and minting money without any accountability for quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you look at the pass percentage in the CSS (Central Superior Services) exam \u2014Pakistan&#8217;s top competitive examination\u2014you will quickly understand the state of our academic standards. The fact that thousands of unqualified candidates still manage to pass is a testament to how low the bar has been set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are We Researching?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most MPhil and PhD degrees in Pakistan are awarded in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Urdu<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Punjabi<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mass Communication<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political Science<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, advanced degrees in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and English Literature are practically non-existent. We are producing graduates in fields that offer little intellectual or economic value, while the sciences and humanities\u2014the real engines of progress\u2014are being ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Simple Calculation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us put things in perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is ranked #1 in the world.<br>LUMS is ranked #608.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if LUMS improved by one rank every single year, it would take over 600 years to reach MIT&#8217;s position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not a gap. That is a chasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Media Was the Last Hope\u2014Now It&#8217;s Sinking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a time when Pakistani media played the role of a &#8220;God&#8217;s soldier&#8221;\u2014critiquing, questioning, and holding the powerful accountable. But even that ship is now sinking. The media has become part of the problem, not the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Teacher&#8217;s Words That Still Echo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A teacher of mine once said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;For an ordinary person, the best and easiest path to progress is education. But when that education becomes substandard, even a degree is useless\u2014you can&#8217;t take it anywhere.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are choosing not to improve. And because we choose not to improve, we are getting worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Call for Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot blame anyone but ourselves. We have allowed mediocrity to become the norm. We have turned our universities into degree-printing factories rather than centers of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we want to change our future, we must first change the quality of our education. That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prioritizing research and innovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraging critical thinking over rote memorization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holding institutions accountable for academic standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investing in science, technology, and the humanities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until we do, we will continue to watch our universities\u2014and our future\u2014slide further into obscurity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Muhammad ZaheerJune 29, 2026 The whole world sees the rising sun, but for Pakistan, even the setting sun is not far from the global view.
