The incident led to the deaths of <strong>241 people<\/strong> onboard and <strong>33<\/strong> on ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to India\u2019s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the reason behind this catastrophic failure appears to be the <strong>fuel control switches<\/strong>. As report says, the fuel switches unexpectedly moved from the <strong>\u2018Run\u2019 to \u2018Cutoff\u2019<\/strong> position, shutting fuel supply to the engines and leading to complete power failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>32 Seconds to Disaster<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 12, 2025, AI 171 took off from Ahmedabad Airport at 1:39 PM IST. According to the AAIB report, within just <strong>32 seconds<\/strong>, the aircraft had lost all thrust and crashed into the <strong>BJ Medical College hostel<\/strong>, located approximately <strong>1.6 kilometers (0.9 nautical miles)<\/strong> from the runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plane managed to reach only <strong>650 feet<\/strong> in altitude before losing power. The report notes that both fuel control switches moved to the \u2018Cutoff\u2019 position almost simultaneously, resulting in fuel starvation and engine failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fuel Control Switches?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuel control switches regulate the flow of fuel to an aircraft\u2019s engines. Pilots use them to start or shut down engines, especially during emergencies or on ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In modern aircrafts like the Boeing 787, these switches are <strong>specially designed for safety<\/strong>. They\u2019re spring-loaded and protected by a <strong>metal bracket and mechanical stop-lock system<\/strong>, preventing accidental movement. To move the switch, a pilot must <strong>lift and then shift<\/strong> it deliberately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cWhy Did You Shut Off the Fuel?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cockpit voice recorder captured a chilling exchange between the two pilots:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Captain:<\/strong> \u201cWhy did you shut off the fuel?\u201d<br><strong>Co-Pilot:<\/strong> \u201cI didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seconds later, both switches returned to the \u2018Run\u2019 position\u2014but by then, it was already too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technical Fault or Human Error?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to U.S. aviation safety expert <strong>John Cox<\/strong>, it is <strong>\u201cvirtually impossible\u201d<\/strong> to accidentally toggle the fuel control switches, especially both at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t bump them off accidentally,\u201d he explained. \u201cNo trained pilot would ever shut off fuel during takeoff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if neither pilot touched them, the critical question is:<br><strong>Who\u2014or what\u2014shut off the fuel?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unanswered Questions Remain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The AAIB report does not yet clarify whether the switches were toggled by human error, mechanical failure, or a deeper <strong>electronic or system malfunction<\/strong>. Both pilots initially survived the crash but later died from injuries\u2014leaving no first-hand account of what happened in the cockpit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators are now relying on a detailed analysis of the <strong>black box data<\/strong>, aircraft wiring, and possible software glitches to determine the real cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">What This Means for Aviation Safety<\/mark><\/strong>???<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This incident raises serious concerns about aircraft safety systems and design protocols.
