{"id":6609,"date":"2025-05-14T15:40:31","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T15:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsmakers.com.pk\/en\/?p=6609"},"modified":"2025-05-14T15:40:37","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T15:40:37","slug":"pakistans-economic-miracle-barrons-warns-investors-not-to-miss-the-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsmakers.com.pk\/en\/business\/pakistans-economic-miracle-barrons-warns-investors-not-to-miss-the-opportunity\/6609\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan\u2019s Economic Miracle: Barron\u2019s Warns Investors Not to Miss the Opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Web Desk<\/strong>: Renowned global financial magazine <em>Barron\u2019s<\/em>, a sister publication of the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, has termed Pakistan\u2019s recent economic performance as an \u201ceconomic miracle\u201d in its latest report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report warns that investors who fail to pay attention to Pakistan now may regret it later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While noting that the recent armed skirmish with India may not derail Pakistan\u2019s recovery, the magazine does highlight that the country\u2019s fragile internal economic foundations remain a significant concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key highlights from the report include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Karachi Stock Exchange Index<\/strong> has tripled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inflation<\/strong>, once around <strong>40% annually<\/strong>, has dropped close to <strong>zero<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The price of <strong>Eurobonds maturing in 2031<\/strong> has surged from <strong>40 cents<\/strong> to <strong>80 cents<\/strong> on the dollar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sandglass Capital Management<\/strong>, known for investing in distressed emerging markets, now considers Pakistan to be far less risky than before.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The report states that the current circumstances have given Prime Minister <strong>Shehbaz Sharif<\/strong> and country&#8217;s military leadership one of the most powerful incentives in economics and life to stabilize the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economist <strong>Selmi<\/strong> believes that Shehbaz Sharif and his team deserve some credit for the current economic improvement. Pakistan\u2019s push toward stability began in the wake of a near-default scenario in <strong>2022\u201323<\/strong>, and today, the <strong>current account balance<\/strong> has turned positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>budget talks for FY 2025\u201326<\/strong> between Pakistan and the <strong>International Monetary Fund (IMF)<\/strong> are set to begin today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gina Lozovsky<\/strong>, Head of Investment at Sandglass Capital Management, remarked, <em>\u201cPakistan is a good story.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Allison Graham<\/strong>, Chief Investment Officer at <strong>Walton Capital Management<\/strong>, noted that while Pakistan\u2019s central bank raised interest rates from <strong>10% to 22%<\/strong>, plunging the country into a recession, the move successfully reined in inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Barron\u2019s emphasized that <em>\u201cstability is one thing, growth is another.\u201d<\/em> The IMF program demands structural reforms that may not be in the interests of the country\u2019s powerful elites and may be unpopular among the general population.
