Written and directed by Saim Sadiq and produced by Khoosat Films, Joyland has not only broken barriers when it comes to telling stories of and casting trans actors but has also earned applause for Pakistan on international level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After victory at Cannes and the news that Joyland has been submitted to the Oscars to be nominated for the Best International Film category, fans were anxious for the movie to come to Pakistan. With Joyland finally releasing a brief trailer, we\u2019re one step closer to just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though the 45 second teaser hardly gives much idea in terms of plot for Joyland, yet it gives us a glimpse of something exciting to come. In the teaser, we see a family gathering which, on the surface seems to be a happy moment, but has an element of unhappiness brewing as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the description suggests Joyland \u201cdelves deep onto the challenging complexities of desire, patriarchy, through the story of the Rana family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Headed by a patriarch, the movie is about the Rana family and as the family has to struggle with adapting to social norms and patriarchal expectations, it all changes when a family member Ali Junejo’s character falls in love with a transwoman (Alina Khan).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How will society react to the \u201ctransgression\u201d? The same society enjoys a transwoman performing but will never accept her as part of the family?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
