ISLAMABAD – Talks between the government and opposition parties, mainly the PTI, have concluded without reaching an agreement, with both sides blaming each other and PTI announcing it will proceed with its planned long march toward Islamabad today (October 4).
Government’s Position
Speaking to media after the talks, Rana Sanaullah, a member of the government’s negotiation committee, said the provincial government was not ready to play its role in the war against terrorism.
“PTI refused to give assurances regarding the provincial government’s role in counter-terrorism,” Sanaullah stated.
He made it clear that the long march would not be allowed to enter the limits of Islamabad. He warned that the march will not be allowed to enter Islamabad’s boundaries. Mischief will be stopped with the power of law.
PPP’s Stance
Sherry Rehman, a member of the government’s negotiation committee and a PPP leader, said the government listened to PTI’s concerns and changed the draft four times.
“We cannot compromise on terrorism. They refused to agree on the long march and other issues,” she said.
PTI’s Response
Barrister Gohar, Chairman of PTI and a member of the opposition delegation, confirmed that a deadlock had been reached in the negotiations.
“There is a deadlock in the talks. The two sides did not agree on the need for another session, but if needed, a session may be held,” he said. Gohar asserted that the long march is PTI’s right.
“Our long march is intact. No step should be taken that creates tension among the people. The long march is our right. I appeal to everyone: do not stop the long march. The answer to a long march is not emergency or governor’s rule.”
Deadlock on Key Issues
Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, speaking to Geo News, revealed the specific points of contention:
| Issue | Status |
|---|---|
| Meeting with Imran Khan | Unresolved |
| Access to Imran Khan’s personal physician | Deadlock |
| National Action Plan concerns | PTI had reservations |
| Operations in IDP areas | PTI had concerns |
“There were small issues, but we could not reach a conclusion. The matter of meeting with the PTI founder could not be resolved. There is a deadlock on access to Khan’s personal physician.”
He added that the government delegation said they were not in a position to arrange a meeting with Imran Khan at this time, but that meetings with his sisters and lawyers would begin.
Barrister Salman Akram Raja
Senior PTI leader Barrister Salman Akram Raja stated that no consensus could be reached on fundamental issues.
