An explosive laden vehicle on Thursday targeted a security checkpoint near NATO’s Resolute Support Mission headquarters in central Kabul killing at least 10 civilians and injured many. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi, confirmed the suicide bomb attack in the Shashdarak area at about 10:10 am. This blast comes shortly after a Taliban-led suicide attack in eastern Kabul on Monday night, which killed at least 16 people and wounded more than 100. The dead and the injured were all local civilians.
It seems quite strange that such attack are taking place while US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is engaged in high level peace talks with the Taliban top leadership in Doha. Both sides have made tall claims to have reached closer to sign a peace deal though peace in Kabul is still far away.
Quite notably, the US and the Taliban have so far completed nine sessions of negotiations to put an end to the 18-year-long conflict.
